Obituary for Lydia M. Kawetschanky (Pfeifer)

Lydia M. Kawetschanky (Pfeifer)
Norway-Lydia M. Kawetschanky, 84, of Norway, Mich., passed away Wednesday, November 1, 2017, at Evergreen Meadows, Norway, Mich.

She was born November 27, 1932, in Papua, New Guinea, to her missionary father and mother, Willie and Elizabeth (Marx) Pfeifer, who were both originally from Kiel, Germany. Willie Pfiefer was in Papau, New Guinea doing work for the Janesville, Wis. Lutheran Church. Upon her father’s death in 1933, Lydia, her mother and 2 older sisters, Betty and Ruth, returned to Kiel, Germany. Lydia and her family survived WWII in Germany by scavenging food left over in the nearby farmer’s field at night. Her mother remarried, and she was raised by her step-father, Hans Delfs, in Germany. Lydia’s sister, Maria, was born to complete the family. After Lydia completed high school she went to apprentice as a beautician and came to America in 1955, at the age of 23.

Lydia was introduced to her future husband, Walter Kawetschanky, by mutual friends and on May 25, 1958, were united in marriage. Together they resided in Janesville, Wis. where their family was raised, and for a short time in Bradenton, Fla., before moving to Evergreen Meadows Assisted Living in Norway, Mich.

Lydia enjoyed reading, crocheting, knitting and traveling.

Survivors include her loving husband of 59 years, Walter; one son, Steven (Clementine) Kawetschanky, Niagara, Wis.; one daughter, Jane (Scott) Volkers, Fla.; three sisters, Betty, Ruth and Maria, all of Germany; and by four grandchildren, Tiffany and Lauren Volkers and Ian and Zak Kawetschanky.

In addition to her parents, Lydia was preceded in death by her step-father, Hans.

Visitation will be held Monday, November 6, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain, Mich. A memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Michael Langlais will officiate.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Evergreen Meadows and OSF Hospice, especially nurse Katie.

You may light a candle in remembrance of Lydia or leave a condolence for her family online at www.JacobsFuneralHomes.com.

The family has chosen the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain, to honor Lydia’s legacy of life.
