Obituary for Irene T. Miller (Pintarelli)

Irene T. Miller (Pintarelli)
Irene T. Miller, 95, of Crystal Falls, passed away Sunday, December 7, 2014, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls.

She was born November 24, 1919, in Crystal Falls, daughter of the late Ernest and Mary (Chesky) Pintarelli.

Irene grew up in Crystal Falls; she married Frederick Miller on October 14, 1937. He preceded her in death on August 6, 1994.

She was a member of the Iron County Medical Care Facility Auxiliary Volunteers, tending to the residents, later becoming a resident herself. Irene enjoyed working with the staff and later being cared for by the staff.

Irene joined the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Post No. 87, of Crystal Falls, on June 1, 1946, and was an active member for over 60 years. Irene served as the Chaplin and was a volunteer for whatever was needed. She took pride in carrying the flag and decorating the graves on Memorial Day.

Irene was very supportive of Veteran’s and proud that her three brothers, both sons and grandsons are Veterans. She was a lifelong member of Guardian Angels Catholic Church, the Church Guild, served as a Sacristan and prepared and served lunches.

She was very sociable and never met a stranger. Irene loved to dance, take part in skits with her friends and entertain. The popular radio show “Queen for a Day”, came to town in the early 1950’s. Irene was our first “Queen for a Day”; she had a quick wit and a strong lifelong memory.

Irene fulfilled a dream when she traveled to South Tyrol, Italy to visit cousins and the area where her grandparents were born.

She had a strong work ethic, working as the head cook at the Alpha Porter School shortly after she was married. Her Italian dishes were special. Irene worked the evening shift at a factory in Kingsford and worked for a friend in the catering business, but most loved working for the owners of Ben Franklin Dime Store as a sales clerk and especially taking inventory.

Irene took it upon herself to learn to drive a car at the ripe old age of 75. Unable to complete High School during the depression, she enrolled at the Iron County Community High School for adults. Irene took classes with the other students, studied, completed all of her courses and graduated from high school at the age of 56. She never stopped learning.

She is survived by two sons, Melvin (Iris) Miller, Kansas City, Mo. and Gary Miller, Eau Claire, Wis.; one brother, Ernest Pintarelli, Menominee, Mich.; three sisters, Alice Haglund, Crystal Falls, Jane Stroud, Crystal Falls and Ruth Maki, Iron Mountain, Mich.; two grandsons, Robert and Michael (Heather); two great-grandsons, Andrew and Ross Miller and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, and husband Frederick, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Robert Pintarelli; one sister, Angeline DeMuri and one grandson, Peter.

Visitation will be Monday, December 15, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home, Crystal Falls. Prayers will be recited Monday, 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, 11:00 a.m. at Guardian Angels Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Jeffrey Kurtz will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls in the spring.
