Obituary for George A. Skogg

George A. Skogg
George Alan Skogg, 83, of Iron Mountain, passed away suddenly, Saturday September 26, 2015, at Hyland Nursing Home, Iron Mountain.

He was born March 29, 1932, in Duluth, Minn., son of the late Albin and Hildur (Johnson) Skogg.

George grew up in Duluth and graduated from Denfeld High School, Class of 1950. He showed an interest in music as early as nine months old. That interest grew as he learned to play piano and sing. George was involved in numerous choral groups, operettas, theatrical productions and barbershop quartets. In high school he was Argan in "The Imaginary Invalid" and Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol." One of George's most memorable experiences occurred the summer after his sophomore year. He was asked to join the prestigious Greysolon Singers of Duluth on their eastern tour, culminating in Washington D.C.

In 1954, he went on to graduate from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. with a major in Chemistry. George married Joan Marie Slinger on June 15, 1957, in Duluth. They relocated to Kingsford, Mich. in 1970, when George became the chief chemist for Nelson Paint Company, a position he held for 24 years. In 1985, he achieved the status of inventor; George received a patent for developing a washable marking fluid for soft gel capsules used in paint guns. He and Joan were active members of the Community Chorus and the Dickinson County Community Theatre for many years. Along the way, George was instrumental in forming the Ironics, a barbershop quartet. He simply loved performing. They attended the First Presbyterian Church. In their retirement they were able to make a few trips to Europe and enjoy many exciting adventures. Together they shared the joys and challenges of raising five children. They were married 57 years. Joan passed away earlier this year on January 21, 2015.

George will be dearly missed. He is survived by his five children, Kathy Hiebert, Tim Skogg, Cyndi Iten, Greg Skogg, and Dan Skogg; one brother, Dick Skogg and wife, Barb; twelve grandchildren, Wesley, Michelle, Joel and Nathan Hiebert, Ashley, Kristopher, Joshua, Nicky and Audrey Skogg, and Abigail, Kaleb and Rachel Louis; four great- grandchildren; his dog Lucky; two nephews, Kevin and Ryan Skogg; lifelong friend, Dick Nicholson , Burnsville, Minn., and many friends and relatives.

Visitation will be held Monday, October 5, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. Funeral Services will be held Monday, 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Michael March will officiate. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery, Duluth, Minn.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to Golden Living Center in Florence, Wis. and Hyland Nursing Home in Iron Mountain for their exceptional care of George.

Memorials in George’s memory can be made to Family Ties Adult Day Care, 800 Crystal Lake Boulevard, Iron Mountain, Mich. 49801.

The family has chosen the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain to honor George’s Legacy of Life.
